Adkins was brought up by a single mother in different working-class areas of London. She loved to sing contemporary pop music as a child and was proficient at playing the guitar and clarinet. However, it wasn't until her teens, when she began to discover the rhythm and blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th century performers, that she began to think about a career in music. She was studying at an elementary school for visual and performing arts that was funded by the government. A friend uploaded songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. Her work was quickly discovered by record labels and signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
